# Argentina citizenship by investment for H-1B holders Argentina citizenship by investment for H-1B holders is a possible second-country planning question. It is not a way to extend H-1B status or obtain U.S. work authorization. An applicant needs to evaluate two separate plans: maintaining lawful U.S. status and assessing whether Argentine nationality would support life outside the United States. A program with unverified intake procedures cannot be treated as an immediate response to a layoff deadline. ### Example: an India-born software engineer Hypothetical scenario: an engineer has an approved employment-based immigrant petition and is waiting for a U.S. immigrant visa number. She is considering Argentine citizenship for a future place to live if her U.S. plans change. A new passport does not normally change employment-based visa chargeability. The State Department explains that numerical chargeability is ordinarily based on birthplace, with specified exceptions. Other nationalities also require their own analysis; nationality rules cannot be inferred from Argentina's position alone. ## Keep the contingency plan practical Assess the household's finances, relocation preferences and ability to use an Argentina option if approved.
