Citizenship by Investment terms were announced, but an operational application channel has not been verified — full status is on Argentina CBI program status.
CBI applications are unverified — Pensionado is not
Argentina announced Citizenship by Investment contribution and bond amounts, but an operational public application channel has not been verified. For retirees, that matters less than it does for people hunting a lump-sum investment shortcut, because Argentina already has a temporary-residency subcategory designed around foreign pension income: Pensionado. That is the primary answer on this page.
Pensionado: the residency category built for retirement income
Pensionado is a temporary-residency subcategory under Article 23(c) of Ley 25.871. It is for foreigners who receive a regular, permanent pension for services performed abroad — paid by a government, an international organization, or a private company. Official Migraciones guidance requires a certificate from that payer showing the pension or retirement benefit is regular and permanent, and that the amount equals or exceeds five times the Salario Mínimo Vital y Móvil (SMVM). Whether a specific U.S. retirement income source — such as Social Security, an IRA, or a 401(k) distribution — qualifies as a 'pensión' under this category should be confirmed with an Argentine immigration attorney before applying, since not every income type is treated identically. Spouses, minor children, dependent adult children, and dependent parents can generally be included on or follow-join a Pensionado application, subject to documentation and income-sufficiency requirements for each person included. Confirm current per-person requirements with an immigration attorney when applying. Filings start in RaDEX while you are in Argentina. Initial temporary residence under this category is granted for 1 year and is renewable — typically up to 3 years total — before becoming eligible for permanent residency.
What to prepare — and what to confirm with counsel
At minimum, expect identity documents, Argentine and foreign criminal-record certificates as Migraciones specifies, proof of address, evidence of regular entry, and the pension certificate described above. Foreign documents generally need apostille or consular legalization and a certified Spanish translation. We are not listing a dollar figure for the five-SMVM threshold here because the SMVM changes; confirm the current peso amount before you file. Whether a specific U.S. benefit (for example Social Security) or a private retirement distribution is accepted as "pensión/jubilación" for your file should be confirmed with Migraciones or an Argentine immigration attorney — do not treat this page as a substitute for that check.
How Pensionado compares to the announced CBI framework
Pensionado is faster to act on because it is available now through Migraciones. It requires demonstrating ongoing pension or retirement income rather than a lump-sum qualifying investment under Citizenship by Investment. Announced CBI figures include a US$350,000 Treasury contribution or a US$800,000 program bond for the main applicant, but those amounts do not create a verified filing window. Different mechanism, different tradeoffs: income proof and renewals on one side; announced investment-citizenship terms without a verified public application channel on the other.
What to do now
If Pensionado looks like a fit, the next step is a consultation to review your income documentation and filing practicalities — not waiting for Citizenship by Investment headlines. You can still register for CBI updates below if you want that option on the radar later.
